So, I read https://unibaken.livejournal.com/682401.html and remembered how I learned to be bold about entering grand buildings. Me and a friend were walking past the Customhouse one day and saw that it was beautiful (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Customhouse_(San_Francisco)#/media/File:U._S._Customhouse_(San_Francisco).JPG). I said we should go in, my friend noted that it's a government building and there's an armed guard at the entrance. I said: "Let's go in anyway and pretend we don't speak English, while they're kicking us out we'll at least see the lobby". So, in we go, and the armed guard asks us: "Are you folks here for the tour?"
And yes I said yes we are Yes.
So, down the stairs comes an ancient gentleman and leads us a fascinating tour, top to bottom of the building including the head of Customs' office. Turns out he's worked there for 50ish years and his job now is to lead tours. Tours that no one knows about. The tour before us was for the family of the architect who built the Customhouse.
That was my luckiest walk in SF ever.
