Today, at the end of the berm I usually walk, on a slight cliff above the ocean, someone hung a swing from a cypress tree. As I swung on it the sun came out and a rainbow appeared with fog behind it exactly to the to of the arch.
Life is amazingly good.
The Temeraire series I'm reading got to Russia (end of book 8). The Russian parts are researched badly enough and contain enough bad stereotypes and outright foolishness that I'd be embarrassed to admit reading the series to anyone of Chinese, Japanese, or, for that matter, British descent. Yes, Spinning Silver is not historically accurate either, but it is, somehow, less obviously so. In this day and age finding a likely name for a Russian countess or getting a precise translation for "Moscow is burning" takes less than five minutes. Oh well, I'll just pretend the whole thing is taking place on another planet and mentally substitute "Wearan" for "Chinese" etc. This would have been a better series if the author did the substitutions to begin with, but one can't have everything.
