In the next Census I might no longer be White. Which is funny, but immaterial to me personally. Imagine, however, that we get a sane president again, and diversity requirements in federal contracts return. Would companies have to ask every employee to re-do their voluntary identification forms? Would companies with a large number of Middle Eastern/North African employees benefit in any way?

Imagine the opposite event – a person who is BIPOC under a US Government definition becoming White with the next census definition change. Imagine that they are a student receiving one of numerous BIPOC-targeted scholarships. Would they be cut off or does every charity has its own racial definitions?

I also learned that US Government definition of North Africa is expansive and includes Egypt as a whole. Egypt has Nubian and Beja minorities. Under the old definition if any of them immigrated to USA they would be both fully White and fully African American. I guess now they’d be MENA and African American.

I’ll spare you my rant on the continuing erasure of biracial experience of people with combined Slavic and Semitic ethnic heritage 😉
